Southold News: Congratulations to our talented student musicians

Aidan Walker

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas — and that’s thanks in part to the Southold Village Merchants Association.

Every year for many years, trees have appeared on the sidewalks of Southold. Businesses purchase the trees, which are decorated by Southold Elementary School students, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. It’s a beautiful holiday tradition. Thank you, merchants, teachers and troop leaders, as well as the children!

Birthdays are up! Happy birthday to Walter Berry and my sister, Daria Moffat, on Dec. 5; Lori Guyer, Dec. 7; Matt Reilly, Dec. 9; and Lynne Baldwin and Joanne Schelin, Dec. 14. Enjoy your day, everyone!

Congratulations to the talented Southold High School musicians who performed under the direction of guest conductors in the 2015 NYSCAME All-County Music Festival Nov. 20: Aidan Walker, orchestra; Nick Orientale, mixed chorus; and Meg Pickerell, women’s chorus. Bravo!

Congratulations also go to Southold High School senior Dominick Panetta, who was named to the 2015 all county football team. He was nominated for his skills as a receiver, though he also played tight end, safety and linebacker on the Greenport/Southold/Mattituck varsity football team. This is quite an honor for a remarkable young man. You made us all proud!

Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to afford gifts for their children. Let’s remember those people this holiday by contributing to CAST’s annual toy drive, which runs through Dec. 21. Unwrapped toys can be dropped off in Southold at the library, Mullen Motors, Capital One Bank, Bridgehampton National Bank or Hudson City Savings Bank. Monetary or gift card donations should be taken directly to the CAST office in Greenport. Call 477-1717 with any questions.

Here’s a great plan for this Saturday, Dec. 5: Start off with a pancake breakfast, then head to the Holiday Fair at the town recreation center and after that drop by the animal shelter for an open house. Details for each event follow.

Southold High School’s juniors will host a pancake breakfast with Santa on Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the elementary school cafeteria. Tickets are $7 per person or $25 for a family of four. Fare includes pancakes, bacon, sausage, hash browns and bagels.

The North Fork Animal Welfare League open house at the town shelter runs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your pet for a free photo with Santa, enjoy refreshments and be sure to purchase the shelter’s 2016 calendar. (An especially adorable hamster represents December.) Please also consider bringing a donation of canned or dry dog or cat food. You can also take a tour of the shelter and learn how you can volunteer or help out there.

Across the street at the rec center, the Southold Historical Society will host a wonderful Holiday Fair Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Leave the pets home for this one, though.) There will be photos with Santa, face painting and lots of vendors with wonderful gift options. For further details, call 765-5500.

The holiday season brings some deadline changes for this column. So here’s early notification: My next deadline is Sunday, Dec. 13, for the Dec. 17 issue. Then I’ll have an extra holiday column with a news deadline of Thursday, Dec. 17. Then we take a week off, so the Southold column won’t appear again until Jan. 14, , with a deadline of Sunday, Jan. 10.

For those who celebrate, as Hanukkah continues, marvel in the miracle of the season. For all others, remember that amid the hustle and bustle, manners do matter. Just saying. Cashiers and clerks are doing their jobs the best they can. Smile at people and wish them Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas. It will go a long way in making everyone’s day wonderful!

I think the weather is confused. Not only is my love of snow being fed, but daffodils are popping up all over town. I wonder what will come next?

The first birthdays involve belated wishes to Ginny Corazzini, who celebrated Feb. 7, and Kim Jobes, who did the same on the 8th. Also celebrating are Peggy Murphy on Feb. 14; Corey Pontino, Scott DeSimone and Karen Van Bourgondien on Feb. 16; Sean McHugh, Feb. 17; Paulette Ofrias, Feb. 18; Liam Mullen, Feb. 19; and Toni Ann Sinning and Hanna DeSimone on Feb. 21. Happy birthday, y’all!

Happy anniversary to two wonderful couples: Dan and Lois Manfredi on Feb. 12 and Donna and Robert Mosquera, whose 25th anniversary is Feb. 17.

All aboard, all you train lovers! The Southold Historical Society will host a weekend of “Trains, Trains, Trains” at the Reichert Center, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20-21, from 1-4 p.m. There will be plenty of activities for children, and at 2 p.m. Railroad Museum of Long Island president Don Fisher will speak about the train layouts.

The North Fork Animal Welfare League will host the third annual “Winter is for the Dogs” Comedy Night Saturday, Feb. 20, at Osprey’s Dominion Vineyard in Peconic. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with John LaRocchia starting the show at 8 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online for $30 at eventbrite.com or at the door for $40. This is a 21-and-older event; wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Speaking of the shelter, it’s in need of donations of pet-safe ice melt, office supplies, large dog sweaters, coats and fleece, canned cat food, “like new” dog houses and peanut butter. Any questions, call 631-765-1811, ext. 1.

An afternoon of entertaining storytelling will take place at Southold Free Library Saturday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. Marilyn Weigold of Southold, a professor at Pace University, will talk about her book, “Peconic Bay: Four Centuries of History on Long Island’s North and South Forks.” Refreshments will be served.

To honor National Poetry Month in April, the library will showcase a gallery featuring the creative work of North Fork poets. To submit a poem, drop it off at the library, along with a few sentences about the poet’s background, or email it to Vivian Eyre at vveyre@gmail.com. The submission deadline is Friday, March 4. The poetry gallery will open April 1 and a reception and reading is planned for Saturday, April 23.

My next deadline is Sunday, Feb. 21, but feel free to get your information to me earlier. Have a wonderful two weeks.

Anyone else feel like a yo-yo in the weather department? From -2 degrees to 51 in eight days.

The birds are chirping, flowers are popping up, but will there be more snow? It’s only the end of February. You all know what I’m hoping for, but I am enjoying the loud melodious song of the birds and the splashes of color on my bird feeders.

Right to the best part: birthdays. Belated wishes go to Ginny Pickering who turned 98 Feb. 15! Celebrations are coming up for Bernadette Taplin on Feb. 26; Kelli Baumann and Terry Pontino on March 1; Jen Cardi on March 3; and Donna (White) Dunne on March 8. Happy birthday one and all!

Belated anniversary wishes to Dan and Ruth Poliwoda, who celebrated their 50th on Feb. 20.

The CAST Have-a-Heart dinner is this Friday, Feb. 26, at Peconic Landing. Dinner includes salad, lasagna, garlic bread, coffee and dessert. For tickets, call 631-477-1717. Proceeds support CAST’s winter emergency funds. This is neighbors helping neighbors.

The Southold High School Drama Club production of “Mary Poppins” will run Thursday through Saturday, March 17-19, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 20, at 2 p.m. More details to come.

There are three tiers of prize tickets — $1, $5 and $10 — and all proceeds support the PTA. Some prizes already lined up include tickets to the College Football Hall of Fame; an American Girl doll; an autographed N.Y. Jets lithograph; A $90 Otterbox voucher; $25 gift certificates to Sophie’s and Southold Fish Market; Top of the Rock tickets; Storyland tickets. The list of contributors is growing as the event nears.

My next deadline is March 6. Feel free to send me birthdays and anniversaries far in advance; I keep them in my calendar. Have a fundraiser? Please share it with me. Have a wonderful two weeks. Remember not to sweat the small stuff. Find the joy in every day.

Congratulations to cousins Katie Krukowski and Shannon Smith. Katie made the fall dean’s list at Suffolk County Community College and Shannon did so at St. Mary’s. They have very proud grandparents who were happy to share the news.

Mary Poppins at Southold High School

As I write this, the town is buzzing about SNOW… yes, first day of spring and we are forecast to get four to eight inches of snow. Ack!

Now there is a two-hour delay; it must be serious. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I would love a snow day since my oldest is in town visiting and they could get in some sibling time. On the other hand, I’m ready for flowers, no coats, noisy birds and flip-flops. Mark this on the calendar: I am not doing my snow dance!

Birthdays: Sarah Perry, March 24; Savannah Alexander and Rebecca Guarriello, March 25; Michael Horne, March 27; Flynn Klipstein, Joe Manfredi, Reese Dunne and Tyler Lang, March 28; Melissa Grzegorczyk, March 29; Jessica Dunne, March 30; Brendan Mullen, March 31; Brian Becker, April 2; and Virginia Rubin, April 3.

Randee Daddona’s birthday isn’t until April 4, but she received a very special early birthday present March 19: her second Emmy Award for her work with Newsday. She was able to share the excitement with her husband, Lenny, and mother, Arline Reiner. Congratulations and happy birthday, Randee!

Congratulations to the Southold High School Robotics team on making the quarterfinals at the Cleveland Buckeye Regional competition. You can see them compete at Hofstra Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2. The event is free and open to the public.

I don’t think there’s a right word to describe Southold Drama Club’s presentation of “Mary Poppins,” so I’ll simply say it was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! From the ensembles right on up to the leads, the students were spot on in their performances. Tapping toes to familiar songs, abundant laughter and delight in the flying were experienced. Congratulations!

The Southold PTA is hosting a chinese auction at the elementary school Sunday, April 3, from noon to 4 p.m., with a preview Friday, April 1, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. There is no entry fee and winners need not be present at the time of the drawing. Refreshments will be available for purchase. To whet your appetite, some examples of auction items include Disney World tickets and a Hampton Jitney ticket book in the $10 tier; an American Girl doll and signed Rangers puck in the $5 tier; and local gift certificates and a lotto tree in the $1 tier. Want to see more? “Like” their Facebook page, Southold PTA.

North Fork Animal Welfare League is hosting Pins for Paws and it’s bound to be a striking good time! The event takes place Friday, April 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. at The All Star bowling alley in Riverhead. The $25 fee includes shoe rental and two games. There will also be prizes and raffles; refreshments will be available for purchase. The event benefits the Southold and Riverhead animal shelters.

My next deadline is Sunday, April 3, at noon. As always, you can call and email me with info as early as you like. Remember to live outside your box: Volunteer at a local charity, help out a neighbor or simply take the time to see the world that’s bigger than just ourselves. As always, greet the people you see with a smile; it could change someone’s day!

Hello everyone! I have to do the proud mom/Southold resident thing here. Congratulations to the Southold High School robotics team, Team R.I.C.E. 870.

They placed second in a recent competition at Hofstra and won the engineering award, which qualified them for the world competition in St. Louis, Mo. Many thanks to advisers Chris Schade and Bob Gammon and to the volunteers, mentors and contributors! I’m afraid to mention people specifically for fear of leaving someone out. As I write this, the powers that be are determining how to get this team to St. Louis. Keep an eye out for fundraisers. To read more, follow the team on Facebook at “Team 870” or on their website at rice870.com.

I am astounded: There isn’t a single birthday to celebrate for Southold residents this column. How can that be? So I dug deep into my Facebook friends — not that deep, but yeah, if you’re Facebook friends with me, your birthday is fair game — and it is with great glee that I ask you to say happy birthday to SHS social worker Jessica Santiago on April 14.

Many wishes for a happy anniversary go out to Vinnie and Louise Tirelli. This wonderful couple celebrates April 11.

Three pieces of library news: April is National Poetry Month and you’re invited to visit the Poetry Gallery and read poems written by local poets of all ages. Arranged by volunteer poet Vivian Eyre, the poems are on exhibit in the community room. There will be a reception Saturday, April 23, at 1:30 p.m. with a reading from 2 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be available.

Poem in your Pocket Day will be celebrated this year on Thursday, April 28. Choose any poem, carry it with you throughout the day and share it with others. Channel your inner bard.

Multimedia pieces by Southold High School students are on exhibit throughout the first and second floors of the library during April. This annual exhibit is curated by art instructor Dan Gosnell. Stop in soon and enjoy the artwork.

The Southold-Peconic Seniors will be running a trip to Quebec and the Isle of Coudres, departing Sunday, May 15, and returning Friday, May 20. Three of the nights will be spent on the Isle of Coudres, with tours of the island and ferries back to Quebec for tours of the city, St. Anne De Beaupre shrine, show entertainment, casino and more. The price is $649 per person, double occupancy, which includes breakfasts, dinners and one lunch, all tours and hotel stays, tax and tips. This is a wonderful time for a visit to our neighbors to the north. Contact Mary Pedersen at 631-765-9243 for further details.

Thanks to the Southold Fire Department and American Heart Association Training Center, 350 Greenport school district students in grades 7-12 have learned hands-only CPR and how to use an automatic external defibrillator. Chris Manfredi, Roland Grant, Michelle Salmon and Jeff Corazzini trained the students during physical education class. Thanks go out to the P.E. staff — Andrea Manfredi, Luis Morales and Cindy Sepenoski — for their class time and for assisting with training.

My next deadline is Sunday, April 17, at noon, but you can send me your news early. Be grateful for one thing every day; you’ll be surprised how much lighter you’ll feel.

Oh, what a beautiful day! So very happy to see the sun. Yes, I know — “April showers bring May flowers.” You know what several days of April showers also bring? A sad face! The flowers are blooming and the trees are ready to explode. It’s exhilarating!

In birthday celebrations we have the following: our daughter, Caroline Koslosky, turns 13 April 21; Adam Siejka, April 22; Billy Burns, who turns 16, shares his April 23 birthday with Greg Ofrias; Janet Auer, April 26; Patrick Allen, who turns 13, April 28; Jen Volosik and Dean Loreto, April 29; Robert Guarriello, May 1; Ruth Poliwoda, May 2; Sean Conway, turning 16 and sharing his birthday with Mike Mraz on May 3; and Reese Thompson, who turns 13 on May 4. Happy birthday, everyone!

Twenty-six very excited Southold High School sophomores left yesterday for their trip to Europe. Destinations include Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and Austria. May you all have safe and enjoyable travels.

In other school news, the Team R.I.C.E robotics team is heading to St. Louis, Mo., next week for the national competition. Donations to offset their expenses can be sent to Team R.I.C.E. c/o Southold High School, P.O. Box 470, Southold, NY 11971. Good luck!

The Rotary Club of Southold hosts its annual chicken and ribs (or salmon) dinner Tuesday, April 26, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Soundview restaurant. The price is $25, not including gratuity, and takeout is available. You may purchase tickets at the door or from Rotarians. Rotary’s fundraising efforts date back to 1948 and help support many programs, including Maureen’s Haven, CAST and the food pantries, to name a few.

Southold Free Library will present “Giving New Life to Old Gravestones” on Sunday, May 1, at 2 p.m. on the library’s upper level. The program will focus on the Old Burying Ground at Southold’s First Presbyterian Church, the oldest English burying ground in New York State. Discover why this cemetery is so special, learn about the preservation techniques a professional conservator is using to clean, straighten and repair the stones and find out how you can participate! Refreshments will be served. You’re also invited to a hands-on demonstration at the Old Burying Ground Saturday, May 7, at 10 a.m. Observe stones being cleaned and straightened and cracks being repaired using techniques that are easy to apply.

Many people living on the East End travel to New York City to experience its many cultural and shopping experiences. The photographs of William Steeple Davis and Charles Henry Meredith show us the ever-evolving landscapes and beauty of the city over a span of 50 years, 1912-64. You can see them at the Southold Historical Society’s Reichert Family Center on Main Street through June 24. The gallery is open Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. or by appointment.

The Southold Sunshine Society will host its 10th annual fundraising luncheon Monday, May 2, at the Wharf House. The beautiful scenery is the backdrop for a sandwich luncheon at noon and game-playing until 3 p.m., with a prize for the high score at each table. Gather a foursome, pick a game to play, then book your table. Space is limited so reservations are required; call Anne Swanson at 631-765-5735.

March Students of the Month at SHS are: Harry Antonucci, art; Kimiko Fujita, business education; Alexi Saenz, ESL; Kathryn Stahl, Culinary Art I; Gus Klavas and Aidan Vandenburgh, physical education; Alex Krukowski, Spanish; Patrick Connolly, math; Mert Altintoprak and Alexa Palumbo, music; Lily Saeli, English; and Sam Basel, NJROTC.

Middle school Students of the Month for March are Rhian O’Neil, art; Tyler Woodhull, home and career skills; Juliet Rand, music; Cole Brigham, science; and Gabriela Contreras and James Hoyt, math.

My next deadline is Sunday, May 1, at noon. Wondering how you can make a difference in someone’s life? Give them your smile. It’s such an easy thing to do. Say hello for an added touch. Reach out and lend a hand to be the cream of the crop. Live outside your box. It makes your worries not too big.

NJROTC

‘May already?’ I think I heard that a few dozen times last week at work. Time seems to be going quickly. Remember when we were kids and you felt like a week was too long and a month was forever?

A belated happy 85th birthday wish goes to Claire Borelli, who celebrated April 25, and to Jewell Gonzalez, formerly of Southold, and Josh Robinson, who celebrated May 2. Others celebrating are: Gina Anasagasti, who turns 18, May 5; Ed Baumann Jr., May 6; Emily Portillo, May 10; triplets Tristan, Kyle and Aaron Davis, May 11; Ed Baumann Sr., May 12; David Kloepfer, May 14; Bridget Rymer and my husband, Jim, who turns 50, May 15 (please feel free to rib him about it); Pete Kelly, May 16; and my son, Jack, who turns 16, May 17.

Those 26 excited Southold High School sophomores who left for Europe April 20 have arrived home after seeing many beautiful sites. The weather varied: one day 70 degrees, the next snow! Thanks go out to the chaperones: Mr. and Mrs. Baglivi, Mrs. Grathwohl, Ms. Derrigan, and of course, the teacher who has made it happen year after year, Mr. Santiago.

The SHS Robotics Team arrived home Sunday. It may not have turned out as the students and advisers all hoped, but they truly made a name for themselves at the world competition. While they were eliminated at the quarter finals, Southold Robotics Team R.I.C.E. finished the competition in the top 8 percent of the WORLD! Well done! Special thanks to Christine Schade, who managed to arrange travel for the team with only three weeks’ notice, her co-adviser, Bob Gammon, as well as the many adult volunteers.

Historical society news: Founder’s Day tea at the Anne Currie-Bell House will take place Sunday, May 15, from 3 to 4 p.m. Come hear director Karen Lund Rooney give a glimpse into the summer’s exhibition, Samplers. Speaking of the historical society, are you looking for a different shopping experience that helps fund it? Why not check out the Treasure Exchange, located at 54325 Main Road in Southold. Currently, they are open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

North Fork Animal Welfare League will host a talent show Saturday, May 21, from 2 to 6 p.m. at The Crazy Fork restaurant in Mattituck. Students from the four local schools ages 10-14 are welcome to compete. Call 631-298-1100 to register. The top three competitors will win a prize. Advance tickets can be purchased at The Crazy Fork for $20 or at the door the day of the event for $25 for adults and $10 for children under 14. The price includes a dinner of barbecue chicken, hamburgers, pasta and assorted salads. This event helps fund the Southold and Riverhead animal shelters.

Want to help the animal shelter but can’t make it to their event? They’re looking for donations of peanut butter, high-efficiency laundry detergent, leashes, towels, blankets, Dawn liquid dish detergent, Windex, bleach, wet and dry food, copy paper and paper towels. Items can be dropped off at the shelter daily. Need a pickup? Call me at the number at the top of this column and I’ll come get it.

The Southold School Educational Foundation is having their first-ever cash raffle. Tickets are $50, with a $3,000 first prize and four $500 prizes. They can be purchased at Southold Pharmacy, Polywoda Beverage, Robert’s Jewelers, Mullen Motors, Sophie’s and Southold Fish Market. Only 200 tickets to be sold; an invitation to the opening of the “History of Us” display at Southold School is included. Funds will go directly to internal grants for teachers to use to enrich curriculum in Southold schools. The drawing takes place June 10.

The Rotary Clubs of Southold and Greenport recently honored the Southold-Mattituck-Greenport Navy Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps Unit and Major Bill Grigonis at a dinner meeting at Soundview Restaurant. The unit was awarded a Rotary Paul Harris Certificate of Appreciation for its “outstanding community service” and for its many top honors in various NJROTC competitions. Major Grigonis was named as a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his dedicated service to the unit and the community. Congratulations!

My next deadline is Sunday, May 15, by noon. Take time to take stock in the positives of your life — it will make the bumps easier to traverse.

My Facebook feed this weekend was flooded with news of graduation, prom, talent show and college kids coming home. So many wonderful, uplifting photos and videos. Congratulations to all involved in such wonderful events.

At the library through the end of June is an interesting series of paintings titled “Do Animals Daydream?” This thought-provoking series is by local artist Nick Cordone. Go experience his take on human emotions as displayed by animals.

And on the subject of the historical society, I need to correct something from my last column. The SHS Treasure Exchange is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Consignments are accepted Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Come pig out at the fire department! Protection Engine No. 1 will host an all-you-can-eat pulled pork and shrimp dinner Saturday, May 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. Beer, wine and soda will be served. The ticket price is $30. Credit cards will be accepted and T-shirts will be available for purchase.

The North Fork Italian American Club will hold its scholarship fund luncheon Wednesday, June 1, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at Giorgio’s restaurant in Baiting Hollow. The cost is $40 per person, with a cash bar. There will also be a chinese auction and raffles. Call Grace at 631-298-1145 for details. The club is proud of its tradition of granting scholarships to high school seniors on the North Fork.

It’s the end of an era. After more than four decades, the Ecumenical Nursery School is closing its doors. A party will be held Friday, June 10, to celebrate longtime Southold teacher Emily Gundersen and her aides Cathy Campbell, Liz Gordon, Barbara Shalvey, Virginia Buono and Darlene Girzadas. The festivities will take place at Southold Presbyterian Church from 7 to 9 p.m. Former ENS families are invited to come and say goodbye. Please RSVP to Sarah at 631-965-7859 or Megan at 516-983-8699.

Webelos II den of Southold Pack 6 did an interesting fundraiser recently. They collected cans and bottles for the five-cent return fee. When it was all added up, the boys collected $318 — that’s more than 6,000 bottles and cans! The den then donated the money to the Southold Town animal shelter. The den consists of Noah Berry, Stephen Clements, Bobby Doehring, Jack Goscinski, Michael Lucak, Justin McGreevy, Matthew Molnar and Brendan Mullen. Great job, boys!

Seventh-grader Juliet Rand has been invited to sing the national anthem at the Walt Whitman Birthplace in Huntington Station for its 30th annual Student Poetry Contest awards ceremony on Sunday, June 5.

My next deadline is early because of Memorial Day. I think I just heard the entire town groan or cheer. Cheer for summer and foot traffic for businesses. Or groan for the traffic the holiday marks. So my deadline for the June 2 issue is Wednesday, May 25, no later than noon.

Find time to enjoy the little things. They will help boost you up when the big stuff hits!

It’s official: I cannot turn left out of my driveway. Summer traffic has arrived. Let’s do something different this year, folks. How about being grateful for the foot traffic to our places of employment and our friends’ stores. Welcome, everyone!

It’s a short birthday list this week. Bill Conway celebrates on June 7; Kerry Conrardy on June 11; and Sondra Russell on June 12.

The Southold School Educational Foundation still has tickets for its first annual cash raffle, with a $3,000 first prize and four $500 prizes. Tickets can be purchased for $50 each at Southold Pharmacy, Founders Tavern, Polywoda Beverage, Robert’s Jewelers, Mullen Motors, Sophie’s and Southold Fish Market. Only 200 tickets will be sold. Proceeds go directly to internal grants for teachers to use to enrich the curriculum in Southold schools. The drawing is June 10; an invitation to the opening of the school’s “History of Us” display at Southold school comes with each ticket.

Horton Point Lighthouse and Nautical Museum opened May 28 and will be open to visitors from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through Columbus Day. Mark your calendar for Keeper’s Talks on Saturday, June 11, “Oysters on Long Island,” and Saturday, June 25, “Shipwrecks: The Commodore.” Both are at 3 p.m.

In library news, come in and enjoy the pocket park just east of the library on Main Road. Fronting the entrance is the Picket Fence Garden, planted several years ago by the Friends of the Library. Walk through the parking lot to the grass and you’ve arrived! Marvel at Tony Valderrama’s mural, filled in with vibrant colors by a group of enthusiastic painters of all ages! On the opposite side of the pocket park is a lovely garden designed by Christine Harmon and planted with beauty by many helping hands. The vision, in the making for several months, became a beautiful reality at the recent Community Art and Nature Festival. This is just the beginning … watch for more!

Here’s a reminder that you can borrow more than books from your library. Fishing rods and tackle boxes can be checked out with your library card. A museum pass to the Children’s Museum of the East End is available, too. Discounted tickets for the Long Island Game Farm and Long Island Aquarium can also be purchased.

Stop at the circulation desk to take a chance (or several) on the “Color Me Calm” raffle offered by the Friends of the Library. The winner will receive several coloring books of designs and patterns, markers and colored pencils, an Avian Friends 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle and two fine bone china mugs made in England. Chances are $1 each with all proceeds directly benefiting the library. The drawing will be Wednesday, June 15.

Colored pencils and blank coloring patterns are also available on the second level of the library. Enjoy coloring while visiting the library! Nearby are newspapers, magazines and a Keurig coffee machine to enhance your stay.

Southold News: Kenney’s-McCabe’s Beach Civic Association meets

The recent events have left me at a loss for words to describe my thoughts. Maybe I will come up with something by the end of this article.

Birthdays: Jamie Engles is a teenager today, turning 13 on July 14. It’s a busy two weeks in the Reilly home: Cathy on the 16th, Jack on the 18th, Chris on the 24th and Yao Yao on the 26th. Others celebrating are Deanna Walker, July 17; William Grzegorczyk, July 19; Lucas Grigonis, July 20; Erin Kaelin, Darlene Fulda, Melinda Hanold and me, July 21; and Rick Osmer and Carolann Losquadro, July 22.

Kenney’s-McCabe’s Beach Civic Association has been in existence for 48 years. Its purpose is to enhance and preserve the residential character of the Kenney’s-McCabe’s Beach neighborhood and to promote the common interests and welfare of the neighborhood’s residents and property owners. Dr. Z. Micah Kaplan, M.D., vice chair of the Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation, will speak at the association’s annual meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at Peconic Lane Community Center. The event will address “How does the ELIH/Stony Brook Partnership Affect You?” All are welcome.

The library has a presence at Goose Creek Beach! Look for the attractive little library sitting atop a post, then open the door, reach in and pluck out a book. They each have a label reading “SOUTHOLD FREE LIBRARY. This book is for YOU!” Let us know what you think!

Southold Historical Society invites you to a morning of fun and frolic at Horton Point Lighthouse honoring Harry Potter and his friends. There will be games, activities, snacks and music based on experiences at Hogwarts! If you’d like, arrive in costume or wear the colors of your favorite house. The event takes place Saturday, July 16 (rain date: July 17), from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is $25 for adults and $15 for children; anyone under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is a must; do so by visiting southoldhistoricalsociety.org or call the office at 631-765-5500.

Do you need to find some peace in the craziness of summer? Come on down to Southold Historical Society’s museum complex for Sunday morning yoga classes at 8 a.m. These one-hour classes are for all levels of experience. Donations are suggested; call the historical society with any questions at 631-765-5500.

Sam Hokanson is off to Cambodia today. Yes, Cambodia! Sam will be serving in the Peace Corps for the next 27 months, teaching English to children. Good luck, Sam!

Andy Rubin recently earned his pilot instrument rating. This is a precursor to getting his commercial certification. He also received a rating for flying complex and high-performance aircraft. Andy is a junior at Bridgewater State University studying aviation science. Great job, Andy!

Congratulations to Jacob Boivin, who participated a second time in Envision Experience’s junior national leadership program. He was nominated by one of his teachers last year and returned this year as an alumnus. Jacob spent the week in Boston at a variety of workshops and classes. Check out envisionexperience.com for more information about this great opportunity for our children.

My next deadline is Saturday, July 23, by noon. Please note the change to Saturday deadlines.

As you leave your home, I encourage you to go into the world with love. No good has ever come from hate. Labels do nothing but divide us when we are stronger united. EVERY life matters. And the most important: Do not judge. You likely, rarely, if ever have ALL the details. Acceptance is so much better, and easier, too.

Southold news: A belated birthday wish and an engagement

Let’s start this way: Mea culpa! I work at a local family-owned business and try to include all my coworkers. To me, celebrating someone’s birthday is like saying, “I’m happy you were born.” Well, I forgot someone last time. Horrible; bad Tina! So: Annie Woodhull celebrated her birthday July 30 with oysters, champagne and NASCAR. She even got to check in trackside with Mike Wheeler, crew chief to Denny Hamlin!

In other birthday news, a belated wish to Emily Kennedy, who turned 2 on Aug. 9. Caroline MacArthur, Kelly Hilary, Matt Hall and Diane Arnold celebrate Aug. 11; Nick Baldwin and Dan McCarthy, Aug. 12; Bette Lind, Aug. 13; Stephanie Biggart, Aug. 14; principal Bill Galati, who turns 50 Aug. 16; Sue Fisher, Aug. 18; Aidan Walker, Aug. 19; Lyndsay Grathwohl, Aug. 21; and Victoria Tondo and Dorothy Galati, Aug. 22.

Wedding anniversaries are coming up for Chris and Andrea Manfredi Aug. 19 and John and Linda Bertani Aug. 24.

If you happened to drive past Founders Landing this past Sunday, you likely encountered a big party. It was the Czartosieskis, who were celebrating their reunion with lots of family.

Wonderful news in the Taplin family. Amanda Taplin, granddaughter of Carol and the late Roy Taplin, announced her engagement to Colin McArdle of Hoboken, N.J. Amanda spent many a summer here in Southold with her grandparents. Amanda’s parents are Roy and Pam Taplin of West Palm Beach, Fla. A 2017 wedding in Costa Rica is being planned.

Come to Castello di Borghese Vineyard this Friday, Aug. 12, at 6 p.m. to meet the award-winning artists participating in Southold Historical Society’s upcoming art auction! You’ll have a chance to converse with the artists and get a sneak preview of the pieces to be auctioned. Tickets are $25; visit southoldhistoricalsociety.org to register. The auction itself will be held Saturday, Aug. 27.

Summer and holidays cause blood reserves to drop to their lowest levels of the year. Come and donate Wednesday, Aug. 17, from 2:15 to 8:15 p.m. at the Southold firehouse on Main Road.

Nina Romano, front woman for Nina Et Cetera, is a singer-songwriter from Sayville who is a throwback to another era. Bring your own picnic and chairs to Southold Historical Society’s museum complex Saturday, Aug. 13, at 6 p.m. Admission is $10 per person (children under 12 are free). Rain location is Southold Presbyterian Church.

The 36th annual Rotary golf tournament will be held Saturday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. at Island’s End Golf and Country Club. This event benefits ELIH, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck and other Rotary programs. This fun-filled afternoon offers golf, fellowship, food, alcohol, prizes and good clean fun. For details and registration, contact Walter Krupski at 631-298-8026 or Kevin McLaughlin at 631-765-6085.

Registration for St. Patrick’s and St. Agnes CYO fall/winter basketball is going on now for grades 3 through 8. Email Jen at 1234sons@optonline.net for a registration form or more information.

Take some time to tell those you care for that you do. Don’t just say “Love you” like it’s autopilot, off the cuff. Look them in the eyes and say how you feel.

Southold News: Fishing poles, tackle boxes for rent at library

$

The days are getting shorter and so is summer vacation. I’ve said before I’m one of those moms who loves summer vacation — the lack of structure and the freedom to just do whatever and go with the flow. Last week, a photo went viral online of a mother literally jumping for joy as her children, looking very unhappy, lined up waiting for the school bus. I am not one of those. Anybody else with me?

First, a list of belated birthdays Dan McCarthy sent me: Cathie Dunn, Aug. 3; Joan Tamin and Terry Hofer, Aug. 13; and Brian Schubert, Aug. 22. Belated wishes also go to Richard Perry, who reached the big 5-0 on Aug. 22; and Ashley Hilary, who celebrated her Sweet 16 on Aug. 24.

Coming up we have Jim Woodhull, Aug. 25; Josh Kettenbeil, Aug. 28; Adam Panetta and Megan Kennedy, Aug. 29; Lydia Numbers, Sept. 2; Irene Stulsky, Sept. 3; Nancy Mullen and Rachel Terry, Sept. 4; and Fred Kettenbeil, Sept. 5. Happy birthday, one and all!

Don’t forget Southold Historical Society’s art auction at Castello Di Borghese Vineyard this Saturday, Aug. 27. The preview starts at 6 p.m. and the auction itself begins at 6:45. One of our own, Randee Dadonna, has several pieces in the auction. The Annie Lewis, by maritime painter Joseph B. Smith (lot # 101), is also featured. This important oil painting, which depicts the 1863 two-masted schooner Annie Lewis under full sail, measures 24 by 40 inches and is valued at $65,000. It can be seen at the society office (call 631-765-5500) or, along with all other auction entries, viewed online at invaluable.com, where bids can also be placed.

Southold Free Library is displaying artwork by the late Jim Murphy through the end of August. Enjoy the local watercolor scenes he lovingly painted.

Don’t forget the library has fishing poles and tackle boxes for rent. The Book Cottage is also a great place to stock up on reading material. They are open Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Come out and support our volunteer firefighters, who selflessly help those in need, by attending the Southold Fire Department’s annual steak night dinner Saturday, Sept. 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $40 and credit cards are accepted.

Our town animal shelter in Peconic needs everything! That translates to old towels and bedding, canned dog and cat food, dry cat and dog food and peanut butter.

I often mention events three weeks in advance, so be sure to check out the community calendar each week to find all the great things to do around here.

My next column has an early deadline due to the Labor Day holiday. Your news should get to me to me no later than Thursday, Sept. 1. Remember, if I do not reply to you, I did not hear your message or get your email.

As summer winds down, I beg everyone to please be more aware while driving. I’ve had near-accidents with a certain bus, almost had my car door taken off by a distracted cyclist and hear screeching tires daily in front of my home. This can be avoided, for the most part, if we all just take extra time to get where we’re going. Be aware, patient and considerate!

Southold News: Adopt a cat for free in September

I could wax poetic about the end of summer vacation and the beginning of a new school year, but I won’t. I will ask you to live in the moment, be in the moment. Put down the electronics — yes, even you moms and dads — and connect with the people in your lives. Take time to really see what your loved ones have going on. Talk rather than text.

First in birthdays are belated wishes for brothers who have celebrated quite a few birthdays: John Adler turned 90 Sept. 5 and Herb Adler turned 93 Sept. 6. Belated wishes also go out to Jean Yedloutschnig on Sept. 7. Kimi Fujita will mark her 18th birthday at college on Sept. 9; Mei Mei Reilly celebrates Sept. 10; Suzanne Fujita, Sept. 14; Eileen Jaklevic and Scott Ofrias, Sept. 16; Jeanne Guariello, Sept. 20; and Sam Perry, Sept. 22. Happy birthday, everyone!

Anniversaries are coming up for Doug and Caroline MacArthur and Doug and Deb Bellomo, Sept. 14; Scott and Mary Hughes, Sept. 17; and Mike and Rose Anasagasti, Sept. 19. I hope you all find time to spend as a couple to celebrate your day!

Do you love cats? The Southold Town Animal Shelter is overflowing with felines. So during September all cats and kittens there can be adopted for no fee, pending an approved application. These are free little bundles of love for the right home. All have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, tested and chipped! Please come down and fall in love! Because are so many cats are coming in, the shelter also needs canned cat food and volunteers to help clean. Call Gabby at 63-765-1811, ext. 1.

St. Patrick’s R.C. Church starts its Faith Formation program Wednesday, Sept. 28. Children may be registered at the first meeting. Forms can be found on the parish website and in the front foyer of the church. Level 1 is taught at home by parents. Please register to receive the materials needed. The schedule is as follows: Mondays: levels 3 and 6, 3-4:15 p.m.; Wednesdays, level 2, 3-4:15 p.m., and levels 7 and 8 at St. Agnes School, 7-8 p.m.; and Thursdays, levels 4 and 5 3-4:15 p.m.

St. Patrick’s annual golf outing is set for Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Island’s End Golf Course. Parishioners and non-parishioners are invited. To sign up, call the rectory at 631-765-3442.

The artist of the month at Southold Free Library for September and October is Melissa Hyatt-DeSimone. Come and enjoy her watercolors of nature, featuring local scenes. A reception will take place Sunday, Sept. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. Melissa also donated a print of her blue crab for the Friends of the Library’s next raffle. Tickets are $1.

Reminder: The Little Free Library, sponsored by the library and Liz and David Shanks, is located at McCabe’s Beach. Great beach reads to take and keep. Everyone should check it out.

Dan McCarthy will have his fourth gallery display in the library foyer during September and October. Dan started his theatrical collection in 1974. That’s a lot of collecting to showcase!

In the coming weeks, I want you to take a deep breath, feel it, enjoy it and r-e-l-a-x. So often I think people are so busy making a living, making a life for their family that they forget to live. If you are rushing every day, are you living or are you a machine?

The second season of preservation work at the Old Burying Ground at First Presbyterian Church is well underway. Thanks to volunteers, significant progress was made last summer, but it’s an expensive process and the committee hopes to raise $30,000 this year. Donations can be sent to the Old Burying Ground, P.O. Box 787, Southold, NY 11971. The public is invited to take a quiet stroll through the cemetery to see what’s been accomplished.

Students of the Month for October at the senior high are Grace Bruer, psychology; Anakin Mignone, Global History II; Rebecca Dickerson, AP Biology; Kylee DeFrese, business; Jossoline Campos, English: Katherine Jarvis, College Culinary Arts I; Emma Alvarez, chorus; Jessica Garrido, overall academic achievement; Andrea Palecia, art; Max Cichanowicz, foreign language; and Cadet PO1 Sean Conway, Cadet of the Month.

For the middle school, students of the month are Natalie Kopala, art; Ben Ward, physical education and science; Cole Hilary and Davin Toman, foreign language; Adam Hubbard and Magda Rodriguez, math; Lane Dominy, English and Home and Career Skills; and Ania Smith, chorus. The Random Act of Kindness award goes to Enya Smith and Annamarie Napolitano.

My next deadline is Sunday, Oct. 16. Please send your information as early as possible. In the meantime, think about this. I have come to subscribe to two words these days: patience and acceptance. My mother would be proud that I finally have patience — not “patients,” like I used to tease her. What about you? What words help you steer through the day?
